Throughout the history of the cinema, movies have required advertising and promotion to succeed. Like the live Vaudeville shows that were promoted by advertising, so too were movies beginning near the turn of the century. (Pre-1920 posters and lobby cards are extremely difficult to find these days). Hence, movie posters have been around almost as long as movies themselves.

Almost from the very beginning, they were works of art, with dynamic colors and graphics to lure the public into the show. Oddly enough, some of the worst movies had tremendously beautiful posters. (Please note: Unlike recent posters and modern day reprints, which are rolled and sometimes even double sided, the vast majority of older vintage posters were produced factory pre-folded. However, they are no less valuable or attractive, especially when framed.)

However, during World War II, thousands of posters and lobby cards were recycled in paper drives. Even after the war, thousands more were tossed into trash heaps, their aesthetic and monetary value unrealized. It wasn't until the 1960's that people began to appreciate the treasures that were movie posters. As we enter the 21st century, thousands of new collectors have joined the ranks of movie posters fans.
